Formed in 2003, the 495/MetroWest Corridor Partnership is a regional advocacy non-profit organization governed by municipal officials, regional employers, legislators, environmentalists, and educators that addresses the needs of the thirty-two communities in the 495/MetroWest region by enhancing economic vitality and quality of life while sustaining natural resources. Since its founding, the Partnership has amassed an impressive record of accomplishment addressing economic development, transportation, water resources, workforce development, housing, and permitting issues, while being recognized by policymakers as the voice for a region crucial to the Commonwealth’s economy. The Boston Redevelopment Authority was created in 1957 to oversee the design and implementation of Boston’s urban renewal plans. Since then, the BRA’s role has grown with the city. Today, the agency’s responsibilities include planning, workforce development, and overall economic development. The internal structure of today’s BRA reflects its expanded responsibilities. The inclusion of the Economic Development and Industrial Corporation of Boston (EDIC) and its Office of Jobs and Community Services (JSC) into the BRA umbrella combines the BRA’s planning and economic development roles with the workforce development programs of JCS to create a Boston that works for residents and businesses alike. The Metro South region includes 18 communities south of Boston and is part of the Greater Boston economy. The region is bounded by Routes 128, 95, 495 and 3. Route 24 is the central artery of the region but commuter rail to Boston is also in place. The center of the region, and its economic, cultural and recreational hub, is the City of Brockton. Brockton 21st Century Corporation, the Metro South Chamber of Commerce, the Old Colony Planning Council, the Brockton Area Workforce Investment Board, and the Brockton Area Transit Authority work as a team to promote the economic development of the region.
