{"id":3688,"date":"2014-03-14T18:04:31","date_gmt":"2014-03-14T18:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/massecon.com\/?p=3688"},"modified":"2014-03-14T20:16:13","modified_gmt":"2014-03-14T20:16:13","slug":"women-workforce-ma-key-steps-women-advance-careers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/massecon.com\/zh\/women-workforce-ma-key-steps-women-advance-careers\/","title":{"rendered":"Women in the Workforce: How MA is Taking Key Steps to Help Women Advance their Careers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In front of a room full of several hundred people at Bentley University, most of whom were women, Governor Patrick and key female executives from across the state\u2019s public and private sectors celebrated \u201cWomen in the Workforce\u201d with the announcement of a new Massachusetts Women\u2019s Leadership Fellowship.<!--more Continue Reading--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In collaboration with Bentley University and its Center for Women and Business, the Women\u2019s Leadership Fellowship will place paid fellows in key positions in state government for a year, as they participate in leadership development and networking programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In addition to the new fellowship, Governor Patrick announced the formation of the Successful Women, Successful Families Task Force, led by Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Rachel Kaprielian, which he said will report back to him in six months with recommendations on what the state can do to advance women in their careers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">In addition to Governor Patrick &amp; Secretary Kaprielian, several prominent female executives spoke on their experiences as \u201cwomen in the workforce.\u201d The panel included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211; Dr. Beverly Scott, CEO and GM, MBTA<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211; Alicia Barton, CEO, Massachusetts Clean Energy Center<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211; Betsy Myers, Founding Director, Bentley Center for Women and Business<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211; Pamela Goldberg, CEO, Massachusetts Technology Collaborate<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211; Marty Jones, President and CEO, MassDevelopment<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8211; Beth Monaghan, Principal, inkhouse<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Recalling their own professional histories, each panelist had a personal story to tell, and all had key messages to take away. Dr. Scott professed that \u201cthere is nothing good about being the only,\u201d stressing the importance of having a second, third, and beyond. Alicia Barton meanwhile spoke to how critical it was to \u201ctake a chance on someone promising.\u201d Betsy Myers emphasized that women need the right support to succeed. Marty Jones, the first female president and CEO of MassDevelopment,\u00a0referred to her rookie days at HUD where she had the good fortune to be mentored by Eleanor White. Pamela Goldberg<i>\u00a0<\/i>expressed gratitude to\u00a0her advisor at Tufts who believed in her capacity to achieve, and Beth Monaghan stressed confidence, saying \u201cpotential looks a lot different on a woman than a man.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Despite the successes of these women, statistics show that in general, women are still under-represented in board rooms and upper level management positions. The newly created Women\u2019s Leadership Fellowship and Successful Women, Successful Families Task Force will aim to help close that gap.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In
