The sixth annual Corporate Welcome Reception, held on April 16, 2014 at the Genzyme Center <\/a>in Cambridge, was MassEcon<\/a>\u2019s way of saying thank you and welcome to 18 diverse companies <\/a>that have recently chosen to locate in Massachusetts from across the country and across the globe. The event recognized companies from a variety of industries, including life sciences, technology, energy, healthcare, and manufacturing, who have put down roots in all regions of the state, creating more than 600 jobs in the process. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe know that the world is a very flat place, filled with all kinds of innovative and entrepreneurial people, and when their businesses grow to a point that they\u2019re becoming global businesses, we want them to think about Massachusetts as one of the places where they are going to be,\u201d said EOHED <\/a>Secretary Greg Bialecki, featured guest at the event.<\/p>\n

The diverse group of companies recognized at this year\u2019s event include: Attend.com <\/a>of Boston; BAUM Retec <\/a>of Methuen; CareCloud<\/a> of Boston; Cryogenetics<\/a> of Woburn; Cybereason<\/a> of Cambridge; Emirates Airline <\/a>of Boston; EthoSolar<\/a> of Marlborough; Facebook <\/a>of Cambridge; Great Wolf Resorts <\/a>of Fitchburg; Jabil\/Nypro <\/a>of Clinton; Labminds<\/a> of Boston; McGraw-Hill <\/a>of Boston; Menck <\/a>of Chicopee; RapidMiner<\/a> of Cambridge; Synacor <\/a>of Westford; Velesco Pharma <\/a>of Quincy; WeWork<\/a> of Boston; and Wisetek <\/a>of Franklin. Each company considered a variety of factors when looking for its new location, and for one reason or another, all settled on Massachusetts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe looked at a few different options but Boston was quite unique,\u201d said Joe Sawyer, VP of Marketing for Carecloud, which is headquartered in Miami and recently established an office in Boston. \u201cSome cities have large healthcare industries and some cities have large technology industries, but really, only Boston has a large and thriving healthcare technology industry. So we felt that in terms of both the talent and the ecosystem, this was the place to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur initial market focus was going to be the Northeast, and Western Massachusetts was just an ideal location because there\u2019s so much within a few hundred miles of where we are in Chicopee in terms of both opportunities and population,\u201d said Todd Bachelder of Menck Windows, a German-based company that recently established its US manufacturing facility in Chicopee. \u201cIn addition to that, in the greater Springfield area you\u2019ve got a history of manufacturing and in the greater Pioneer Valley you have a wonderful educational infrastructure that really should help us to find the folks we\u2019re looking to employ.\u201d<\/p>\n

A key goal of MassEcon\u2019s annual event is to introduce new companies to the rich Massachusetts network, and that is something event-host Genzyme has experienced and benefited from first-hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cGenzyme has developed its success through its own strengths, but Genzyme would be nothing without all the collaborations that were developed over the past 30 years,\u201d said the company\u2019s CFO Marc Esteva.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust to learn what other people are doing and getting inspired by (it)\u2026.that\u2019s worth being here already,\u201d said Ingo Mierswa, CEO of RapidMiner.<\/p>\n
